Miami-Dade Public Library System presents “How Did We Get Here? A Cuban Migration Story”

– Sandra Castillo presents a new take on her personal experience –

(Miami, FL – September 11, 2015) Share your Cuban migration story with Sandra Castillo, Miami Dade College Professor, as she presents a new take on her personal experience through historical poetry. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m. at the West Kendall Regional Library located at 10201 Hammocks Blvd., Miami, Florida and on Thursday, October 29, at 6 p.m. at the Kendale Lakes Branch Library located at 15205 SW 88 Street, Miami, Florida.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Sandra M. Castillo left the island of her birth with her family in the summer of 1970 on one of the last of President Johnson’s Freedom Flights and grew up in South Florida. A Miami Dade College alumna, she transferred to Florida State University and received her master’s degree. For twenty‑five years, she has been writing about the exile experience. Her work explores issues of memory, history, gender and language, but it reflects a personal vision, tied primarily by history, personal and otherwise. She depicts contradictory worlds, the memory of a homeland and memory politics while examining the ordinary reality of exile as well as the duality of existence.

Her poems have appeared in The North American Review, The Connecticut Review, The Florida Review, Puerto del Sol, The Belleview Literary Review, The Cimarron Review, Clackamas Literary Review, as well as various anthologies including Paper Dance: 52 Latino Poets, A Century of Cuban‑American Writers in Florida, Little Havana Blues, Touching the Fire: Fifteen Poets of Today’s Latino Renaissance, Cool Salsa: On Growing Up Latino in the U.S., American Diaspora: the poetry of displacement.
