Rock out on reading at your local library this summer

– Miami-Dade Public Library System’s 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is on! –

(Miami, FL – June 1, 2018) Libraries rock and so does reading! Everyone is invited to take part in the Miami‑Dade Public Library System’s 2018 Summer Reading Challenge beginning June 2 through August 4 at all MDPLS locations. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!”

People of all ages are eligible to participate in the challenge, which includes special events and programs, fun activities and the chance to win great prizes including an iPad Mini, Miami Marlins tickets, a one‑year family membership to HistoryMiami Museum and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, a family four pack of tickets for a Broadway show at the Adrienne Arsht Center and much more.

Here’s how it works: Visit any MDPLS branch, our Bookmobile or Technobus anytime during the Summer Reading Challenge to register and pick up a reading log. For every 30 minutes you read or listen to a book, complete and submit one entry ticket for the prize drawing. The more you read, the more tickets you can submit and the greater your chance of winning a prize. Receive additional entry tickets by attending any library event or program. The drawing will take place after August 4. You do not need to be present to win.

We’ve also teamed up with The Children’s Trust for their #Read30 social media challenge to encourage parents to read with their kids for 30 minutes a day. Simply read a book with your child, then snap a selfie of you, your child and the book and post it on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #Read30 and #MDPLS. You may also visit any MDPLS branch and take a selfie with our special #Read30 frame and post it on social media. Show your post to any library staff and receive an additional entry ticket for the prize drawing.

“School will be out soon and your library is here to do its part in helping our children and families prevent the ‘summer slide’ of learning loss through our Summer Reading Challenge,” said Library Director Ray Baker.

The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is made possible with the generous support of the Friends of the Miami‑Dade Public Library and our sponsors: Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami‑Dade County, Benihana, Dade County Federal Credit Union, Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, HistoryMiami Museum and the Miami Marlins.
